Fill your heart with the Sound of Music: Austria – Salzburg

Travel to Salzburg and experience the joy of European city life in storybook surroundings, where lush green landscapes and the magnificent Alps meet the picturesque Salzach River. For the best views, start at the Fortress Hohenzalburg, high above the city’s baroque skyline. Then, take the Mönchsbergaufzug and visit the Museum of Modern art after taking in panoramic views of the city and its surroundings. In summer, Salzburg comes alive with the Sound of Music, as not only is it the city where the classic musical was filmed but is home to the world-class music and drama of the renowned Salzburg Festival (19 July – 31 August). Enjoy a ticketed event or any of the impromptu performances filling the streets, as Salzburg becomes ‘one giant stage’. Next stop: Munich, with the Bavarian capital just a 1 hour 30 minutes train ride away.

TikTok trending: Slovenia – Lake Bled

Steeped in beauty and legend, Slovenia’s honey pot, Lake Bled, is radiant in summertime. The lush tree lined shores truly come to life and so does its atmosphere. Take a gondola across to Bled Island and visit the beautifully situated Pilgrimage Church, while taking in views of the magnificent Karavanke Mountain Range. On your return, don’t miss their local treat, kremna rezina, a cream pastry considered such a delicacy that in 2016 the Slovenian government designated it a protected dish. Then, why not travel on to one of Europe’s most beautiful capitals, Ljubljana, only an hour away by train.

La Dolce Vita: Italy – Cinque Terra and Tuscany

Embrace the spirit of the Mediterranean on an enchanting train ride through Italy, discovering the captivating regions of Cinque Terra and Tuscany. Start your trip in Milan or Parma on your way to La Spezia, the doorway to the picturesque villages of Cinque Terre.  Hike along the scenic coastal trails that connect the colorful villages, cool down in the crystal-clear waters of the Ligurian Sea, and sample fresh seafood dishes. Then, settle in Genova, to take a day trip to Portofino, a luxurious village on the Italian Riviera. Finish your itinerary by travelling through Tuscany, taking in Pisa’s architectural treasures and Tuscany’s cultural hub, Florence.

Historic hotspots: Croatia – Zagreb and Split

Historic cities, a stunning coastline, and unlimited opportunities for adventure - Croatia is a must-stop on any summer interrailing itinerary. Begin in Zagreb, Croatia’s vibrant capital. Stroll through the upper town for city views, or meander Tkalčićeva Street for charming coffee shops and local eateries. Just 40 minutes from Zagreb, enjoy a day trip to Samobor, a picturesque town known for its baroque architecture, with local markets, historic sites, and wineries. Then, continue your travels with a scenic train journey to Split. Explore Diocletian’s Palace (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), before taking a short ferry ride to Croatia’s beautiful islands – Hvar, for fun and nightlife, and Brač, home to perhaps the most famous of the country’s stunning beaches, Zlatni Rat.
