The origins of MSC Cruises trace back to 1988 when the Aponte family, led by Gianluigi Aponte, acquired the Lauro Lines, an Italian cruise company. MSC Cruises' journey began modestly, with just a few ships operating primarily in the Mediterranean. However, the turn of the millennium marked a period of rapid growth and modernization. In 2003, the company launched its first newly built ship, MSC Lirica, which was followed by a series of new vessels in the Lirica class. This marked the beginning of MSC's transition into a modern and competitive cruise line.

The real breakthrough came with the introduction of the MSC Musica class in 2006, followed by the groundbreaking MSC Fantasia class in 2008.
